Weed Potency Is Skyrocketing: Should We Worry?
Marijuana is 10x more potent today than 30 years ago. And that’s just the plant…
Marijuana ain’t what it used to be. Not by a long shot. In 1995, an average sample of marijuana had about 4% tetra-hydrocannabinol (THC) the active ingredient that gives the “high” of “getting high”.
Today that potency is approaching 20%. You got to give it to us humans, we sure know how to breed for desirable traits.
And 20% THC is what you get just from breeding cannabis to produce more of the chemical. We can get way… higher. THC can be extracted from raw cannabis using butane or other solvents, and purified into ultra-concentrates at 70, 80, even 95% purity.
These substances, known as (and I’m going to sound like I really don’t know what I’m talking about here, because I don’t) dabs, shatter, wax, and so on, can be vaporized and deliver pretty herculean doses of THC in a short period of time.
